One solution is that specialised pedestrian bridges, bridges that actually hover over the roads. These are of course mostly in the richer and booming district of Pudong, where the traffic is especially high. Strategic planning in Shanghai means that all space is used. This means that the bridges are placed in the air, where the space was not previously utilised. There are advantages to the elevated pedestrian bridges, besides the reduction of congestion, one being that tourists and citizens alike get a view; since the bridges are actually suspended about 20 feet from the ground.
Trains are also a popular mode of transport in Shanghai, where the bullet trains are fast to deliver passengers to their destinations. Partly the reason why the trains were built up over the years to become faster, with a maximum commercial speed of 210 km/h, was due to the influx of population. The popular transport had to cope with the growth and need of business, and thus a solution of increasing the speed was demonstrated.
