Shanghai is a growing
city, with an ever-increasing population. With such a large populace in a
relatively small area, many problems have arisen; things that are more
important than others to discover a solution for.
Some large problems that have affected the city recently include transportation and traffic congestion. Even though there are many worries within the city of Shanghai, such as meeting food demands and town planning, but the focus will be transportation and the hindrances that follow.
Transportation is a large and mounting problem in China, and especially in heavily populated areas such as Shanghai. Pollution, congestion, and accidents on roads are common in most areas, due to lack of planning and development. As a fairly rich city, Shanghai has access to the resources to have a lot of these two things; but there is still room to improve, the city is still home to much pollution and overcrowding.
Over 80% of the city’s pollution of PM2.5 (A type of pollution particle that can cause health problems) comes from traffic and heavy industries. The average density of PM2.5 is 56 microgram per cubic metre, which is about 60% over the national standard. Roughly 80% of the air in Shanghai is polluted, which is a large difference to Hobart’s air cleanliness; the air is nearly 15% polluted. A sign of the pollution in the Asian city is that smog is common and the visibility is often low at these times. This is also one of the main causes of traffic accidents in the city.
The number of accidents on roads in Shanghai is not an overwhelming figure; the city has about as much traffic accidents as any other mega city. Of course Shanghai would have more accidents than a city with a smaller population, with an amount of 450,000 car accidents in China per year; this causes about 470,000 injuries and 100,000 deaths. The number is so high because China has a huge population with 1.3 billion people, which is quite different to Australia’s 13.1 million.
Shanghai has a lot of alternative ways of travelling around, for work, school or other causes. The place is home to the largest bus system in the world with 1,424 bus lines, and also one the fastest trains in the world, the maglev train which can ride at about 430 Km/h. Even with such advanced public transport, there are still many who prefer to travel in private automobiles. This causes high levels of traffic congestion in Shanghai, so much so that the government has put policies in place that limit the amount of cars on the road. Shanghai is not new to traffic jams, in fact it is common to have them during rush hour.
Congestion, pollution and traffic accidents are all associated with transportation in Shanghai, which most people would contemplate as problematic, if, of course they are at high levels. Many solutions will definitely be created in the future, but some may be more effective than others; some will be beneficial to the environment and avoid pollution. It may be many years until a solution is found to these problems, but there are always new ideas and inventions arising.
The primary mean of transportation in Shanghai is the bus; as the cost is low and the bus system itself is one of the best and largest in the world. Use of private transport and walking are also a main way in which the city’s inhabitants get around; for almost the same reason as the bus ride, the cost is low and it has a lot of development.
Shanghai has a sophisticated system for roads, to lessen traffic congestion. An example of this is the elevated highways that the city has; with elevated highways, there is still room below for growing infrastructure, that Shanghai is bound to have a lot of in incoming years. This basically means that the highways are built to lessen traffic and to avoid taking up too much space.
There are many pedestrians in Shanghai, as it is a step away from crowded roads, highways, train carriages, buses and more. Pedestrians can take alternative means of way through the city in which other transportation cannot, such as elevated pedestrian paths. A common solution to traffic congestion in Shanghai, and also many other cities worldwide that can afford it, is to elevate paths and roads. This saves space, as mentioned before, and it also lessens congestion, which is a great plus for the ever-increasing population. An added advantage to walking is that it is healthy for the body and is free voyage.
Trains aren’t used much in comparison to other ways of transportation in the city; even with the many citizens in Shanghai, more prefer to go by cheaper means of passage through the city. This means that there is much opportunity to improve upon, and to get the maximum capacity of people to board the trains
In the past, due to a smaller population, Shanghai did not need to find innovative ideas to promote transportation. Recently, public transportation has become a big thing in large cities, as it is usually easier to get around now. This means that there will most probably be a large demand for increased and more sophisticated public transportation in later years.
Mentioned earlier, Shanghai has created many solutions to traffic congestion, which is to elevate ways of transport such as highways and pedestrian walkways. To add to this theme, a solution already put in place, is a monorail system. A monorail is basically an elevated train line, which means that it saves space and is easier to access different and more remote locations. The train is able to access different place as it can travel over and easily around existing buildings. There are many already existing monorail systems in China and also around the world; the monorail system in Shanghai is currently used with maglev trains riding on it.
Traffic congestion is caused by people needing to get or to visit somewhere. With such a large population in Shanghai, traffic congestion is a large and upcoming problem, in which many have tried to solve.
One solution to the traffic congestion within Shanghai could be to create more train or subway lines to branch out and access more locations, such as shopping centres/districts. This would make it more convenient to get to where is needed, and as there are many shopping centres in Shanghai already, everything is reachable to a reasonable distance. There is no use for extra transport if everything is at hand’s reach, which is why it would be simpler to extend train lines. With an already speedy train in Shanghai, the Maglev Train, it would be easy to spend an extra few minutes to commute to a more advanced and complex area full of the needed utilities. Maglev or bullet trains are also eco-friendly; the mode of transport in Shanghai has been nominated and has won awards from the World Travel Awards for being the world’s leading green transport solution company many times. This means that many could be made and would make little impact onto the environment.
It is obvious that there are many people in need of transportation, which is why another solution could be to upgrade existing means of transportation. If the government was to put more funding and care into the public transportation system, fewer people would have to use private means of passage; meaning that traffic congestion would be reduced. The funding could be to upgrade existing transport, which would save space and would minimise pollution; instead of simply creating more means of way through the expansive city.
Overall, even with the many solutions that people have invented to lessen traffic congestion in Shanghai, ideas can still come to fruition. The two solutions can prove useful to lessen the factors of pollution, congestion and road accidents in the city, and to also improve productivity. These solutions can make it easier to get around the city, such as getting to work in the morning and going home in the afternoon.
